04Welcome Dr. Anne Knock Louka Parry Educator & Facilitator CEO & Founder The concept of ‘modern’ depends on where you are placed in time. Since we are currently placed in the third decade of the 21st century, modern learning for modern teaching relates to where we find ourselves right now in history. Few will disagree that we are in unchartered territory globally with converging exponential technologies, shifting ideologies and progressive beliefs. But what does this mean for educators, school administrators, and the state and national education system? And how will this affect students now and into the future? The industrial model of mass education was designed for efficiency and uniformity, corralling students into a common experience. It largely prevailed until the beginning of the 21st century, which, in many aspects of life signified a shift in culture as much as a shift in time. It was in that first decade of the new century that many in education began to see the potential of technology and then question the relevance of the model of schooling to adequately prepare students for this emerging digital era. Over time, ideas about the future of education began to emerge and a groundswell for change developed. Educators explored future-focused skills and diverse pedagogical approaches, often incentivised by game theory. Whichever the learning or teaching mode, many have recognised the importance of moving beyond the conveyer belt of the content delivery-test-repeat model toward deeper learning that prepares students for the digital age. The Evolution of Learning and Learning Environments Modern Learning for Modern Teaching Article by The Learning Future The Learning Future is a team of passionate educators and changemakers who are focused on the transformation of learning environments, systems and structures so that educators and learners can thrive. Louka is a former Teacher and school Principal, he has since trained thousands of educators and leaders globally to increase their positive impact. Anne is an educator, facilitator, and coach whose approach enables profound shifts in strategy, leadership, culture and pedagogy through her wisdom and experience. As educational thinking shifted, questions emerged around the suitability of school and classroom design to support those shifts. Uniform learning space designs, modelled on the factory, began to give way to more agile and open learning environments that recognise modern concepts and necessitated new ways of thinking, working, and learning. Furniture for these spaces started evolving from a one-size-fits-all model with the desk and chair, to a diverse range of soft and hard surface items. This modern furniture allowed the creation of a rich variety of spaces that afford teachers and students choice, improve student engagement, communication and curiosity, while supporting the flow of learning. Modern learning for modern teaching describes where we find ourselves today, adopting ideas and methods that serve our time. However, we all know that what was once modern, can quickly become out-of-date. It is our responsibility to keep our eyes on the horizon, to learn and understand, to adapt to the changing world and employ wisdom and discernment as we make progress. In this guide you will find inspirational schools from across Australia who have embraced modern learning spaces and concepts, as well as research, galleries and tips from educational professionals. DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS 6 General Learning 06 It is important to be purposeful when designing general learning spaces as it has been proven that the physical environment has a powerful impact on students’ learning outcomes. The creation of a rich variety of spaces that allow teachers and students greater choice in how they teach and learn can improve student engagement, communication and curiosity, and support the flow of learning. Agile, modular furnishings, the integration of technology and the impact of colours and finishes are important components when creating spaces that foster a sense of belonging and engagement that nurtures the creativity present in all of us. 16Vertical Learning Spaces Vertical Learning With a growing population, space is at a premium, and changing pedagogical models, Australia’s traditional school designs are being redefined for a new age. In contrast to the schools we’ve been designing for decades, vertical schools are generally more than four stories high and are often in dense urban areas. These vertical schools accommodate the full range of teaching, administration, and recreational facilities that schools need. However, a vertical school’s outdoor spaces flow onto rooftops, terraces, and ground-level courtyards. Architects are mindful to create meaningful and varied indoor and outdoor learning environments with distinct paths of travel between them, allowing for social connectivity and exercise. Given their central urban locations, the school facilities are often accessible to the community, providing a sense of connectedness with the local area. Furniture in vertical schools is a key feature and needs to be robust and transitional between indoor and outdoors. 24Resource Centres Library & Resource Centres Libraries have functioned as centres of learning and information for thousands of years. As the way we learn and teach changes, libraries are evolving from their traditional role as a warehouse for books, individual learning and quiet study into a place that facilitates the core tenets of 21st century education. Libraries and Resource Centres are often the heart of the school community. They are places that inspire free thought and spark curiosity, empowering learners to discover and problem solve. They have a wide range of spaces and resources including specialist equipment to cater for technology and STEM related subjects, additional teaching spaces, meeting spots and showcase spaces for the school and wider community. You can see why Libraries and Resource Centres are a treasured place for students to find a fresh perspective outside their usual classroom.
